The Foot Above Foundation was started as a direct response to the flooding in south Louisiana August of 2016. This flooding was catastrophic and touched at least 110,000 homes. With damage this vast and covering entire regions, immediate emergency response was necessary. Now that recovery has begun, there will be a continued need to assist families, schools, and businesses that lost everything; many of whom had no flood insurance. Because of the nature of flood recovery, Sarah Joy Hays wanted to start a more permanent mechanism for responding to longer-term needs as well as establish a charitable foundation to address future emergency response needs. If you or anyone you know has been through a flood, you probably know you must cut the sheet rock a foot above the waterline. The name of the foundation will hopefully resonate and tell the story of the great un-named flood of 2016 as well as provide hope for those rebuilding.
